Simplest possible declaration

Postby Nick_MissionFish on Thu Dec 18, 2008 1:00 pm

Does anyone have a really brief and simple Gift Aid declaration that has been cleared by HMRC?

I notice the HMRC "best practice" model Gift Aid declaration now has three separate tickboxes and seven footnotes.

I'm trying to come up with version that has a single tick box, and as few words as possible, for a particular online application.

Nick

At its very simplest a gift aid declaration must contain:

Surname of donor and initials
Personal address - house number/name and postcode.
Name of charity receiving the gift
Date of gift
Amount to which Gift Aid will apply
A Tick box to claim the gift aid
And the tax statement, i.e. donor must pay enough income tax/capital gains tax to cover the Gift Aid.

Everything else is "bells and whistles".

Hi Bill and Happy New Year!

I'm trying to find the shortest possible wording for a tax declaration. Do you think the following wording would tick the box, so to speak?

"Add 28p Gift Aid from the Government. I’ve paid enough income tax to cover this."

Admittedly, we might lose people who only pay CGT, but I imagine they're few and far between.

Best wishes,
Nick

Nick

I suggest you change the 28p to 25p as the 3p difference is government grant under transitional relief - it is not connected to tax. The statement ought to be enough - but suggest that you seek confirmation from HMRC first - always advisable when a gift aid declaration does not match that on the examples given by HMRC on their website. Suggest you speak to Janet Beattie or Roger Yates at HMRC Charities in Bootle.

Thanks, Bill. I've sent the text to Janet for confirmation, and will post here if I get a response!

Positive response from HMRC.

Say the donation is £1. It should be OK to say as the tax statement, "You must have paid 25p income tax".
